FILA President Raphael Martinetti inaugurated a bust of Prof. Rayko Petrov



Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Martinetti underlined the contributions of Prof. Rayko Petrov to the sport of wrestling. Prof. Petrov’s remarkable scientific books are being digitalized into several languages in order to be accessible in the virtual library of FILA, explained Raphael Martinetti.

The ceremony took place on 20 April 2012 in the courtyard of the National Sports Academy, in the attendance of many prominent guests: the Olympic wrestling champions Boyan Radev, Petar Kirov and Valentin Yordanov, who is also the President of Bulgarian Wrestling Federation, the Mongolian sumo champion Asashoryu, the CELA President Tzeno Tzenov, family members, friends and colleagues of Prof. Petrov. 

Rayko Petrov (1930-2011) worked fifteen years as the national free-style wrestling coach and trained the first Olympic and world wrestling champions of Bulgaria. He has significant scientific and practical contributions to the formation of the famous Bulgarian free-style wrestling school. In fact, he participated in 12 consecutive Summer Olympic Games as a coach and a sports man.

He also worked as president of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation from 1969 to 1990, Vice-president of the Bulgarian Union of Physical Culture and Sports, member of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, Director of the Psychology Institute, Vice-director of ECNPKFKS, manager of "Wrestling and Judo" Department and Rector of the National Sports Academy.

Many years he has been vice president of FILA, manager of the Technical Committee and the Supreme Coaches Wrestling School, as well as scientific, coach and medical committees. His working experience also includes working in the Executive Committee of the World Council of Science and Sports of UNESCO.

He was chosen for a laureate of the "International wrestling hall of fame" - Oklahoma, USA.
